- Notes - The only factual information we have of John H. is that he built and lived in a small house just south of Troy Alabama, in the community of Spring Hill. I was told stories of John by Ethel Cole who heard them from her mother. As far as we know he did not marry nor did he father any chilcren She told me that John retired from teaching agriculture at Troy State University around 1900. She said that he had a large book case of books in his house that went to the ceiling and he took great pride in his books. She told me that Margaret (Sissy) and lived with John and more or less kept house for him. She did the cooking and cleaning. She knew exactly how to time John and would have his dinner on the table and waiting when he returned from milking the cow(s) on his small farm. She said that John raised many types of nuts and fruits. He apparently had great knowledge of how to grow things and sold stuff along the roadside at the house. She said it wouldn't be uncommon for him to have five or six types of peaches grafted on one tree and that he experimented with many plants. I have been unable to verify that John worked at the university. They have no records that go back that far, nor is there a Thesis or Dissertation on file in the library under his name. So I do not know if he was a professor or worker there. Either could be the case. There is no record of what the "H" in his middle name stood for, but my best guess is Hiram. I have no proof of that except that his Brother, Joseph, named one of his sons William Hiram likely after someone in the family. Hiram is a very common Scottish name and I am guessing that this family migrated to the US from Scotland . The birth and death dates I have for John are calculated from census information. He does not seem to have been buried at the Spring Hill Church where his sister and Mother were buried. I have no further information about John but will update this page if more information is uncovered. |
