- Notes -

Oral history passed down through our family tells the story that Susannah was the only child of Sarah Sessions and her husband whose name is lost to history. The parents of Susannah were first cousins who fell in love while living in their homeland of France. They were too closely related and not allowed to marry but they ran away finding passage to North Carolina. At some point they migrated to South Carolina where Susannah was born. That was according to census records. The family eventually found their way to Alabama likely to secure a grant of land.

Susannah met and married Charles Neighbors Windham and as far as we can determine they lived in Pike County around Troy. There were two children born into the family prior to the death of Charles. Those children are William T. and Roy D. Windham. The older of the two died of wounds he received during one of the battles in the defence of Atlanta.

After the death of Charles Windham, Susannah married Jonathan Colbert McDonald who was a bit younger than she. The story of how they met is not known. Four children followed their marriage before Jonathan joined the war effort, never to return.

Jonathan never returned, being killed in one of the battles north of Atlanta on May 21, 1864.

It is likely that the family went through a bit of a struggle to make ends meet after Jonathan was killed. There was also an added burden brought about by the older son William, who likely needed considerable nursing for his wounds after he returned home from the war. The fact that William was ill from his wounds and with no father at home to keep the peace, it is easy to imagine how there may have been tensions between the Windham and McDonald children. William T. Windham died on February, 4, 1866 and is buried in the Spring Hill Cemetery not far from the family home. His stone is very near that of Susannah.

The other son, whom I was told was named Richard (on the back of the above photo it states his name to be Roy D.) married and had five children, living out his life in the Troy area. I was told he became a physician or worked in the medical field.
